Advertising

My eye always went straight to the ads whenever I’d read magazines growing up. Now, even as my magazine reading has been replaced by doomscrolling over the years, I still stop and muse at every ad I see in my feed. With these samples, I just let creativity take the reins while trying to master the art of competing for someone’s attention.

Fender Spec Ad

In my early teens, I learned to play guitar with the hopes of drumming up some romantic interest. That didn’t work out, but I learned a lot about chords and scales and, whatever, it’s fine. Regardless, Fender — and the Fender Stratocaster in particular — has been an icon of coolness for both myself and generations of guitarists before me, so I wanted to encapsulate that feeling of doing everything you can to emulate your musical heroes.

Letterboxd Spec Ad

How do you get across the idea a film review app is so much more than that? Letterboxd has taken on such a life of its own that, not only is it at the heart of discourse about what’s cool in cinema, it represents a piece of its users’ identities.

‘Get Your Fire Back’ Ad

“They say all men think about is sex, but that’s just not true. They also think about better sex.” I could muse about the challenges of advertising a sexual health supplement with class, but I think I’ll just humbly state my pride in that one-liner, and leave it at that.
